One of my first posts on the blog was way back in October 2008 was about a fave pair of shoes I had as a kid, Clarks Wayfinders.
Sifting through some old comics the other day, I spotted an original ad for them, which reminded me that they came with special Letraset transfers too! The little sheet of transfers looked familiar and when I checked out this marvellous resource:http://www.action-transfers.com/html/panorama/lunarbase.shtml
I saw that they were included as part of the cool Moonbase Panorama series! Nostalgia overload imminent!
I had the Clarks shoes with the animal tracks in the soles. And then there were my terrible two tone brown shoes with platforms. Oh Crikey!
ReplyDeleteI want photos! (grins)
ReplyDeleteI had the animal paws as well. Never sa the moonscape ones - much better!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant site on those Panorama books! Not sure if they're from the same series, but we had one about dinosaurs and one about the Battle of Britain (where I need to have a rummage for that may actually have survived).
(and as a pedantic aside, I didn't know Mirage and Stiletto jets could make it to the Moon :)

ReplyDeleteJust love that.
I always wanted them for the little compass in the heel but never did get a pair!
As a kid I had quite a few of those transfer panoramic things though. A dinosaur one and a Roman/Egyptian/Cleopatra one where my favs if I remember right.
I remember them being great fun and there were a lot of figures to play around with on the bigger ones. I seem to remember there were small panoramas and then the big ones. Loved them.
These totally passed me by, but we did have Clarke'a Commandos with the little code book! I think they had a compass as well?
ReplyDeleteA few years ago I was working with a girl (who was just a friend!) from the former East Germany and she introduced me to the rub-down transfers that were issued over there, they included things like Dolls-house furniture and Soviet armour! Don't thnk they had pre-printed scenes though.
Dennis Knight who did most of the artwork (scenes and booklet art)for these and the Patterson Blick versions, is still alive and I was very lucky in being able to visit him a year or two ago, he also has a mould for an WD/MoD recognition model of a Sherman, which was far more interesting for me!!!!
'Torconse'...the feeling someone else had better shoes than you.
We'll be adding a huge amount of info on Wayfinders shoes to Action-Transfers.com in the next few months, with loads of adverts. Meanwhile, you can see a list of which ads we've found so far, here:

Thanks Splaterama, most impressive.
DeleteBy the way, Wayfinders were by Bata — not Clarks. I don't know why everyone (& I mean EVERYONE!) confuses the two companies; they were deadly rivals. You can find out all about Wayfinders here: http://www.action-transfers.com/html/a_articles/bata.shtml
ReplyDeleteThanks for the insights Splaterama. Fascinating!
