MOL

The Manned Orbital Laboratory (MOL) was part of the United States Air Force's manned spaceflight program, a successor to the cancelled Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar military reconnaissance space plane project. The program was announced to the public on December 10, 1963, as a manned platform to prove the utility of man in space for military missions. Astronauts selected for the program were later told of the reconnaissance mission for the program. The program was developed as a space station used for reconnaissance purposes (KH-10). The space station used the Gemini B spacecraft that was derived from NASA's Gemini program. The contractor for the MOL was the Douglas Aircraft Company. The Gemini B/MOL craft was externally similar to NASA's Gemini spacecraft although it underwent several modifications. The most obvious was the addition of a circular hatch through the heat shield to allow passage between the spacecraft and the laboratory [JGPhoto]. There's something very SWORD about the spacecraft.

  1. Is it the craft visible at bottom-right, Woodsy? Any close-up pictures, please?

  2. Didn't Revell do a kit of this space station? It would have made a nice Spacex Major too.

  3. Yep, Toadster, the ship in the right corner and the little one hovering over the vortex. Remind me of a Scout or a PF2.
