Atomic Bill and Nuclear Terry: Super Carriers of Power

Looking through the early months of the blog back in 2008 and wanting to continue Wotan's aquatic theme I thought I'd re-post one of my favourite threads [so, two posts together] about the mysterious Captain Scarlet Atomic Powered Carrier kit:

WOTAN and I have been chewing the fat about a toy he saw in toy shop window back in the 60's. Next to a Probe Force ship was a submarine streamlined like the SWORD liner in the annual. Googling the night away I've come across a great oldish article about Captain Scarlet kits by one Bill Earle/ Darkstar2. There's a cool old kit in there [pictured below], the Atomic Powered Carrier by Paramount of Canada [originally by Imai of Japan].
Although not the toy WOTAN saw as a wee boy [that turned out to be the JR21 Stingray Submarine Aircraft carrier!] it is interesting. The site says 'Paramount Industries produced a final kit based on Spectrum craft, their No. 1260 ATOMIC POWERED CARRIER. Box artwork shows the ship launching two Angel Interceptors from one of its three decks, as it churned through ocean waves. Though obviously a gigantic craft, its kit form measured only 5 inches. To the hull was attached an elastic band powered water screw and variable-position rudder. Though it was finely detailed, its accuracy is unknown as I have never seen this craft anywhere other than in its box painting' ( Bill Earle/ darkstar2).

To see the full article check out: http://www.darkstar2.demon.co.uk/models/andermod.htm. I've also found a forum discussion that's discussed the very same kit on the cool Spectrum Headquarters!

STOP PRESS! Box Art revealed!
The WOTAN grapevine strikes gold again! Here is the beautiful Imai box art and lovely built-up model of the Paramount Nuclear/ Atomic Carrier. The picture and information is courtesy of supertoyfinder Terry Harle:
  • Captain Scarlet Series No. 20 Nuclear Carrier (released 1968 ?)
  • Box dimensions: 14 cm x 9 cm x 3 cm
  • Kit number: 129
  • Retail: ¥50
  • Moulded in 7 red and 4 white plastic pieces.
  • Propeller is powered by rubber band.
  • Decals included.
  • A Century 21 licensed product
  • Other than being powered by rubber band there are no other ‘action’ features in fact there are no Angel Interceptors included in the kit.
2011 postscript: Are there any more pictures of this fabulous box or kit out there? I can't find any more at all! Did it appear in TV21 strips? I've found another reference to it in an old undated SIG Captain Scarlet Merchandise Guide posted online. None of the links work now but it's by the Andermeister himself Dennis Nicholson [with assistance way back then from one S. Le Vesconte - well done Shaqui!]
