I've come across a simply encyclopedic site about the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey, THE UNDERVIEW There's sections on the cinema release dates with a fantastic photograph of an external 2001 cinema biilboarding and an amazing page of collectibles. A fabulous labour of love by the site creator no doubt, it has been around for years it would seem and is a veritable treasure trove for us to enjoy.
This guy does show some good stuff. The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Modeller 2001 special is well worth grabbing as aside from all the other lovely stuff there is a feture on this guy. Something to note for Anderson fans is that despite Kubrick being dead set on anyone pillaging props from his film and being sure everything as destroyed Gerry Anderson's team managed to nab a back pack.It is seen in an episode of UFO which although later filmed at Pinewood was originally done at MGM too so must have been in the prop store.

ReplyDeleteI recall reading in one book about 2001 (might be 2001: Filming the future) that one of the things Stanley Kubrick loved about the UK was being able to go out without carrying identification. Looks like our future isn't so bright in some ways. But this is no place for political commentary ....
(Steps off her soap box and walks away, forlornly)
Wonder where the back pack ended up Jim? I seem to remember seeing a black and white photograph of Kubrick and Gerry together - next to a tree? Or am I dreaming? Did they meet a lot?
ReplyDeleteI don't remember myself any shots of Stanley and Gerry. I don't even know if they met to be honest. It is well known that during THUNDERBIRDS Kubrick approached the Andersons with a view to loan or take completely Derek Meddings to do his miniature effects on 2001. Anderson refused but was happy to meet Kubrick and discuss film-making and general stuff. Kubrick wasn't interested in that at all and that was that. However Gerry's main assistant Brian Johnson was looking for a way out from AP/Century 21 and met Kubrick and joined the team down at MGM making 2001. Anderson went mental according to Johnson. So in answer to your question or comment I don't think Gerry ever did meet Kubrick following his rebuff over Meddings and his effects boys.

Sorry I meant Derek's main assistant!
