Boxing Day

Got some new printer cartridges this month, which meant I could have a play at creating a couple of home-made low-tech boxes that I don't have. First up is the X-80 Space Capsule from the JR21 X-series above [thanks WOTE!]. Having done my VERY basic 'photoshopping' I printed this onto card, which was simply folded to produce the carton-style box. Being relatively small I was able to print it in two neat halves on A4 paper, which made for a clean finish. I 'made-up' the end flaps and the size as I don't have them. Not three bad - it's in the display cabinet!

Second and much bigger was the AHI Super Rocket Plane, a C21 Moonship variant. Being bigger the box art required a collage system, which I found very tricky. WOTAN had photoshopped the main image from a grainy original, which looked great and of a professional standard. As I didn't have the imagery for the sides and ends of the box I 'made' these up from the main graphic. The size was available in books and is determined by the over one-foot long ship. Not knowing the original box type, I opted for a two piece coffin of thick card. I got paper glue everywhere lining up the various pictures, which didn't fit [I got the sizes wrong!] but it was fun! When technology permits, I'll do this one again methinks, as I haven't done WOTE's fab image justice. But for now the Super Rocket Plane is boxed and in the cabinet!
Next up in the 'boxing ring' will be reader Graeme Walker's professional quality Tarheeel Probe Force 3, which can be found in the blog side-bar. Hope I don't bodge it too badly! Let me have pics of your home-made boxes and I'll happily blog them [just don't put me to shame! hee hee]

  1. Woodsy, when you make these boxes do you mark them 'reproduction'? Could cause chaos otherwise!

  2. Hi Sean
they are purely for my own pleasure and would never enter the 'general population'. I only make one - for me! I blog them for the interest of readers and I hope that the text makes it clear that I am reproducing them for me at home. It's a good point though when professional templates appear on the blog from time to time - I'll make it clearer that they specifically are reproductions as other readers can print them out.
