Crawling about in the attic the other night, looking for something completely different, I came across my old Dr Who 10th Anniverary Special from 1973. Besides being a reall ride back to the classic days of the show, before it all went a bit pear-shaped with Peter Davidson and Sylvester McCoy. Some of the monsters may have been a bit comical, such as the early Cybermen from the Tenth Planet or the seaweed from Fury of the Deep, but the Daleks have pretty much remained unchanged. The recent episode 'Victory of the Daleks' introduced the new, beefed up modern versions and the cool military mode classic Daleks, both of which I loved. Looking back at the 1973 magazine, it was plain to see the slow evolution of the design. Also in the mag was a cool text story, written by the great Terry Nation, called 'We Are The Daleks!'. It was illustrated by the airbrush maestro Philip Castle and has some gorgeous retro artwork. Ive taken some swift shots this morning on the kitchen table, excuse the quality - its a large format mag, so wont fit on the scanner!

While I was digging in the pile of comics, I rediscovered my Explorer 12 storybooks too!

I love that artwork WOTE. Reminds me of Chriss Foss. Any one of those pics could have been an LP cover! And well done finding your Explorers books. Are they the ones I swapped you years ago?
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff! I loved those rocket engines with the rolls-Royce trade mark! BTW, I trust you'll forgive me going off-topic, but I've found the Pete n'Dud sketch "Spuperthunderstingcar" on Youtube:

A great laugh, plus it has a space toy that you featured on the blog a while ago!

ReplyDeleteI remember that 10th Anniversary special very well! It was the first time I got to out faces to some of the names I knew, such as Dodo and Stephen. At the time, I hunted all over London for a copy, without success, and made my weary, tearful way home ... only to find a slightly battered copy in a newsagent I never usually went into but which was not too far from where I lived!
WOODSY - those are indeed the very books, rescued from the mildewed garage and put in the loft, only to be lost in a pile of comics! Chris Foss - now there is a name to get me started! Asimovs Foundation and the Lensman novels were classically illustrated by him!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, those wonderful Chris Foss covers. There was a time, shortly after leaving school, where I would buy SF paperbacks simply to get the covers ... and so got to read some wonderful novels I might otherwise have overlooked.
ReplyDeleteHi WOTE - just saw the artwork for the Explorer 12 books (Space Adventure and Ocean Survey)with what looks like artwork by the great Mike Noble and wondered if there is any chance that you could scan the books for me? The reason is that I'm working on a project to collect all of Mike's artwork and this would fill a gap in his most recent work for me. In return I can provide you with almost any item(s) of Mike's art that you want. I'm also collecting all of Chris Foss's artwork and can provide scans of anything by him you want.
ReplyDeleteHope you can help,
Cheers,
Bill

ps - these are just personal projects, NOT commercial ones - I just love Mike's art and have been trying to complete my collection for years.
