LP VEHICLES – Me Too or Me First? - BY FERRYMAN

JR21 X-30 above

As a follow up to my 'X' toys piece I thought another similar series of space toys is worthy of mention. These are of course the more elusive LP space toys. I'm going to refer to these as the LP Space Explorers for want of a better name.

These charming plastic beauties are very similar and every bit as collectible as the 'X' toys range but possibly even more elusive. My first encounter was with the Space Explorer which can easily be confused with the X-30 Space Explorer. The differences are clear to see upon comparison but to the unfamiliar eye, seen separately, the two ships can be confused as different issues of the same toy. It is easy to confuse other members of the LP series as 'X' toys as well because of their similar designs, size, construction and colouration etc. However unlike some HK manufactured toys LP always branded their creations with their distinctive symbol. The LP Moon-Explorer car is another look-alike design, baring way more than a passing similarity to the SWORD Moonbus. Which of these toys came first?

The LP toys that I have seen, come in boxes that although very similar in layout, appear to be of a slightly older graphic style than those of the 'X' toys. The packaging is also made of much sturdier cardboard. Another difference with the LP Space Explorers is that they were moulded in different colour alternatives – usually as red or blue versions.

So far I have come across the following LP Space Explorers - PICTURED ABOVE:

- No.102 Moon-Explorer Car

- No.103 Space Explorer

- No.104 Space Rocket

- No.??? Astronaut

I'd love to know if anybody out there has any additions to make to this list.

So the question is, which came first, 'X' toys or LP Space Explorers? Or they were both around at the same time?

  1. fabulous stuff as always. I had the Space Rocket as a kid - circa 1969/71. The only part i have left is the tiny spaceman, minus an arm! One thing i always thought was odd was the silver 'aerial' in the nose seemed to be the same as the one in the white and red space ship from Apollo Moon Exploring series. It looks like its been re-used on the back of the robot as well. Ive seen a yellow/orange version of the Moonbus in an LP boxed set too.

  2. Wow, I'd love to see an LP box set (not the record variety)!
I've just noticed the moonbus blasting through space on the 'astronaut' box. Cool. And what are those pistols he has? They look like Action Man flare guns!
