ALIEN, PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES AND MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

After enjoying the scary delights of Carry on Screaming over the Bank Holiday (Odd Bod, Valeria and DS Bung!) two more sci fi films are on UK TV this week, which  are also favourites of mine. Mysterious Island, based on the Jules Verne novel, is an early example of the fabulous skill of Ray Harryhausen and his stop-motion monsters; this time of particular note are his giant crabs. Wonderful. The second film is the acid-for-blood spattered queen of space horror Alien by Ridley Scott. Giger's Xenomorph is easilly the scariest monster ever put on celluliod. Some years ago I came across a Mario Bava film called Planet of the Vampires and it's clearly the origin of some of the Alien imagery and ideas. To see the 'space jockey' in a campy Italian space vampire flick from the 1960's is really strange but enlightening! All recommended Autumn viewing. Just never call your cat Jonesy!
