Hi Woodsy,
I've just started restoring my 1966 vintage Dinky FAB1. Initially, I tried spraying the grill with chrome paint, but I was not happy with the finish. Plus it was too fragile and subject to the slightest scratch.
So I decided to polish the metal and use Johnsons Klear to protect it. This gave a better finish keeping more of the detail.
So attached is the first photo for your delight.
I do note the pockmarks where the number plate will go. But that will be covered.
My intention is to make it look pretty much as it looked when I unboxed it for my birthday in 1966. With just a few alterations.
Wish me luck.

Good luck Bill, I've understood that FAB1 is a tricky one to restore.
ReplyDeleteHi Arto. The restoration is coming along very slowly. I found further lacquering with Johnsons Klear and then a light dusting with chrome paint, plus a further lacquer of Klear has fused everything where it should be. The next bit will be printing off the FAB1 number plate for front and rear on water slide transfer.
ReplyDeleteThen I'll be giving the body work a careful soak in cellulose thinners and then once the body is prepared I'll spray it pink. I'm still undecided about painting the chrome stripe on the side, or to leave it like the original dinky. One thing I didn't like on the original was the gold cabin. When I was a child I did paint that a completely different colour. I may well leave that as is. Because, to be fair, it's not a bad job.
We shall see.
