On the Buses: How Terranova47 Got To School

Hello Woodsy

For infant school it was a Hornsey Council owned Bedford OB bus painted gray.

From age 8 Junior school was by a London Transport Trolley bus.

From age 12, Secondary Modern was by the same Trolleybus route only three times the distance.

In 1962 Trolleybuses ended and were replaced by Routemasters.

There were no instances of being locked in a box? London buses didn't have them.

For London Transport from 1959 we had bus passes so only had to pay the fare first day of term.

My daughter growing up in NYC attended her three schools by the Number 6 route subway.

  2. Corgi made a OB, don't remember a Dinky model? The actual bus I travelled on ended up with a local Boy Scout Troop. It's 70 years since I rode it yet in my head I can still recall the sound of the transmission and gear changes!

    1. How fabulous Terran and it looks great. What does OB stand for?

    2. The O chassis was the Bedford range going into WW2 with it being the basis for their military lorries. The B was for bus. The model in my photo shows an OB in Grey-Green Motors colours. I remember riding this version from north London out to Margate for a day at the seaside.

    3. How wonderful. I've never been to Margate. Did you eat fish n chips or whelks or potted shrimps?

    4. Fish n' Chips at Dreamland. A self contained funfair which predated Theme Parks by decades. I don't recall there being anything like Dreamland after the Battersea Funfair was downsized after the Festival of Britain in 1951.

  3. I was taken to The Festival of Britain once, I was almost 4 years old. I remember the tram ride to get there. How hot the day was. A long line to buy a Walls Ice Cream from a tricycle vender. I remember seeing a Standard Vanguard car exhibit and wondering why it was indoors surrounded by people. And finally being disappointed that the line for the working ride, by Roland Emett the Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Branch, was so long we would still be on it to this day!
