You may recall that I recently found an almost complete pair of Cherilea Space pods, one just missing a few accessories and the other simply a half sphere.
As the pods were originally designed as toy versions of the Dr Who Mechanoid robot, it wasn’t difficult to track down a 3D print file for one. A friend of mine in University kindly ran off the file for me and in about 4 hours, I had a neat hemisphere!Slightly shallower than the space pods and without the openings in the upper ring, it still passes extremely well as a pod. The scanner and booster are from Kinder Egg toys and the retros are pen lids. The legs are once more made from bent sprue, with Lego studs for pads. They are far from perfect and would benefit from some 3D printed copies, but I would have to create them myself in a CAD package. Maybe soon!
The finished pod looks superb, Bill. Is this the start of an invasion force? :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent save Bill! I'd love to get into 3D printing but there is absolutely no room for a printer in this shoebox house.
ReplyDeleteLovely work, Wote! If you do want to get into 3D modelling, I'd strongly recommend getting Microsoft's free 3DBuilder (as it was a Win10 product, it may be discontinued soon)
ReplyDeleteAs an entry level program, it is very easy to use. You build objects by editing and combining basic shapes like cones, spheres and cylinders. A torus trimmed down to an arc would produce those elegant knees of yours! And it's very easy to vary the diameter of cylinders to produce rings and joints.
Do let me know if you get to try it out, I think you'll find it's a buzz!
Ill have to give it a go Looey. I tried Sketchup years ago, but thats moved on a bit now. We have Adobe Substance in uni, but its way above my level of understanding yet. Ill see if I can get hold of that program before the Uni upgrades to Windows 11!
DeleteAmazing results Bill!
ReplyDeleteAt first I took it for what it was - a space pod. But then ran across a picture of the spaceship from the 1964 movie, "First Men In The Moon" and the two are very similar.
ReplyDeleteCherilea will be on the phone!
