I kind of doubt you may have heard of it, but there was a very similar comic strip I found recently called "Buz Sawyer".
There may not appear to be much in common: Dan Dare is a space Pilot adventurer, Buz Sawyer is a WWII (and Cold War) Pilot adventurer. (Dan flew space ships, Buz flew Navy Dive Bombers) But the characters are very similar.
Similar to Digby, Buz's rear seat gunner, Sweeny is kind of the comedy relief, a bit goofy.
I found Buz Sawyer fascinating because his adventures kind of mirrored my visions of what my Dad lived through in WWII and the Cold War. The artist is very faithful in his drawings of Navy ships, planes and bases.
