As far as I know, it's a real thing, intended to be released by lunar landers to explore the surface beyond the landers themselves. In fact, I think they've already been sent up, and have taken pictures of landers, some of which have fallen over and 'died'.
it looks like one of a number of novelty Takara robot type toys, purely for fun and not intended for exploration!

Fascinating Mish, I had a feeling these little orbs were sent up to work. Poor little beggars, grafting and dying up there!
