Then, Voyager

Who remembers the shortlived Voyager magazine, by EMAP in the Uk? It was launched in 1982 as 'Space Voyager' as a special and then later as 'New Voyager' on a monthly basis. Although it only ran for a total of 18 issues, it was a great mixture of resources, from space technology, science fiction fandom to modelling and astronomy. The first issue, Space Voyager was especially exciting, as it was a detailed combination of articles on Star Wars, Alien, Blakes 7 and real life spaceflight info on Voyager, Space Shuttle and the innovative design for the british Project Daedalus.

Renowned space modeller Mat Irvine was technical editor, so this aspect of the magazine was especially thorough and informative.
The Blake's 7 article was excellent, with some rare photographs of the models, rather than the actors, which at the time were in quite short supply.

What really caught my eye at the time was the amazing Space Model Survey, which was produced by Mat Irvine and the late Andy Yanchus - one of the foremost authorities on space model kits.
Around about this time, there was a glut of space themed models from Airfix and MPC, including the Star Wars series, Star Trek, Black Hole and Buck Rogers. Whilst I voraciously gathered most of these up at retail, with the exception of the MPC Alien figure - I was amazed at the range and extent of the japanese models that were listed, especially the Gerry Anderson series kits, that appeared on the checklist.

The list is possibly extended further in later issues, if I recall, but Mat Irvine did go into much greater detail some years later in a dedicated book - 'Creating Space' which documents all the 'real' space kits made over the years from all the major manufacturers. A fabulous read in itself.

Here is the original and quite comprehensive model list, with a further article on classic Space models from Issue 4.

  3. Fab stuff and new to me Bill. Looked a great read. Amazing modelling resource. I moved abroad in 1981 so won't have been aware of it at the time. I have the book Creating Space. Even Triang SpaceX gets a mention.

I had Space Voyager/New Voyager. My copies are currently in storage, so I can not refer to them, so thanks for the pages. I got the book Creating Space last year. A great book, packed with information on Real Space, concept, and missile kits.

  6. Yes, I had a few of those. The later issues moved more into real space articles rather than SF and although these were interesting, as a youngster I was more into the SF film/tv and model articles. I suppose by then (post Return of the Jedi at the cinema) the SF space boom had dried up.
