Just wanted to share this totally unexpected find.
This packet of Primrose Space Race Sweet Cigarettes was placed between decks of playing cards at a local antiques shop. The empty packet with great graphics would have been the find of the day in itself, but with contents still there it is a little miracle!
As we did not have sweet cigarettes (but liquorice pipes instead) when kids, this was my first sighting of those cigs reminding me of little blackboard chalks with one end tipped in red. Also the collectable card, in this case no. 18 of 50, was present in the packet.
There seems to be a lot of these 1969 Space Race cards around, but not so many empty packets and even fewer full ones.

Wow - you did well to find those in such good condition too! I remember those cards well and i think I have a loose set. The sweets used to set my teeth on edge, they were so sugary! Bill
ReplyDeleteThat was a great find. I remember those sweet cigarettes, with the red ends. But I do not recall them coming in packets, they were sold loose at the local small shop/dairy/convenience store, in the days when lollies could be bought loose, and you could pick what you wanted - filling a small white paper bag for a few cents.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys. In 1976 I spent all my pocket money on Space: 1999 bubble gum packets. Didn't mind the gum too much, but adored the gum cards with photos from the tv series. I believe that would have been the case with Space Race cigs too.
ReplyDeleteVery cool Arto! I remember fondly the candy cigarettes' we had as kids - Marlboro specifically. The ends were red to signify the filter LOL Fortunately as an adult, smoking was one habit I never picked up. I have a complete set of Lucky Dip Sweet Cigarette Cards "Transport Present and Future" from 1956
