Early American SF TV Shows

Here is another interesting video from You Tube. A look at very early American science fiction TV shows, covering the decade 1949-59.

While I had heard most, there are a few that were new to me. Just under 20 minutes, and full of vintage film clips.

Many of these early shows were broadcast live, and were only 15 to 30 minutes per episode.

Do you remember them?

  1. Thanks Paul, a great intro into these Golden Age scifi shows, enhanced with some toy pics too.

  2. Space: 1999 is a British production with two American leads.

  3. I saw many of these in re-runs over the years. Rocky Jones never did it for me, but Captain Video was great - so primitive! My favorite is the German/French production Flash Gordon, filmed partially in the bombed-out ruins of Berlin, and featuring villains with heavy German accents. I still have that show on DVD, its an amazing time capsule. Captain Z-RO was pretty bizarre as well SFZ

  4. Too young when originally broadcasted. But I rediscovered all the shows later ( with the exception of "Rod Brown and the Rocket Rangers", as all the kinescopes were ordered destroyed by a judge). I ended up making a post retirement business from making 1:6 action figures from many of those shows.

  5. Fascinating video! I missed most of the early shows due to being too young at the time. When the DuMont Network went belly-up in 1955 it's said that truckload after truckload of films, documents, etc., were driven to the East River in New York and dumped! I do however have a complete set of "Rocky Jones Space Ranger" on DVD
