What are you Watching?

What are you watching on the telly readers?

The Missus and me have just finished SUSPECT series 1 and 2. 1 with James Nesbitt was watchable largely because of him. The second was dire, possibly the worst crime series we've ever seen!

Alas, we failed to find a new box set immediately and have wandered off watching our own thing, the Missus European crime light and me Marvel.

I'm struggling to find anything new on Disney's Marvel. I tried Guardians of the Galaxy III and was really disappointed. Such a grim sad mess after the first two light-hearted triumphs. Adam Warlock needs a day with Homelander!

Deep Impact was a nostalgic treat last week. Volcano too. Lake Placid, Dantes Peak and Twister would be good but I don't want to pay anymore than we already do for Prime, Netflix etc. I'm tight!

The big treat for me will be MEG 2, or is it 3? I forget. Big monster movies have my vote any day if the week, even if Jason Statham isn't Marlon Brando. I'm waiting though. Far too dear to rent at the mo!

The Boys 3 is on so I could start that. I loved the first two seasons. Homelander gave new meaning to a menacing maniacal autocrat! Do you like the Boys?

What are you watching readers? Or are you listening to the radio maybe?

  1. Ive finished The Boys recent series 4 and waiting on the final season next year or so - very gory and gratuitously horrific, but also blackly funny. The last series was a bit sedate by Boys standards, until the last couple of episodes, where it mirrored real life a bit too closely! The Acolyte from Star Wars has just ended too, a glimpse into the golden age of the Jedi and quite a good little drama. On Disney there is a ton of the Timothy Oliphant series 'Justified' about a US marshall in the deep south of America - very watchable and again, darkly funny in places. On the film front, I watched the lacklustre 'Sting' - a comedy horror about an spider brought to Earth via a meteorite, which is gathered by a child as a pet. naturally, it assumes serious proportions and proceeds to ravage the occupants of a large building. Not for the arachnophobic, but with some seriously dodgy animatronics. Again on the horror front 'Late Night With the Devil' was a film in the style of a seventies chat show, which supposedly aired back in 1976, featuring the supposed master tapes and outtakes of the recording. It centres around a failing chat host, who in a bid to boost ratings, invites a psychic researcher and her student, who is reportedly possessed. Very well filmed and thoroughly authentic in terms of look and feel, one or two dodgy F/X, but in keeping with the show. The final denouement is however excellent and clearly recalls The Exorcist influence.
Also 'Furiosa - A Mad Max Story'. Visually impressive and a great prequel to the Charlize Theron character in the earlier film, but lacking the balls out action and pacing of the first film. Some similar chase scenes, but the general story is a little slow and gets caught up with too much dialogue and monologuing from Chris Hemsworth. One for the Max fans, i suspect. And finally, rather oddly - I have been really loving the australian childrens series 'Bluey'. Again on Disney, I started watching this over a year ago for my grandaughter, but it is a wonderfully funny and quite emotional little cartoon, about a family of dogs living the modern life in Oz. The father, 'Bandit' has some of the best lines in any show and is clearly aimed at the parents watching the show, whilst his daughter, the eponymous Bluey, is cute and reacts so well to the intricacies and trials of modern life, without the usual issues that plague kids tv programming lately. 1. Just checked the credits for Justified. It's quite an old series. I'll give it a whirl this year. I actually thought the zombie sheriff guy from Fallout was in it too. Is he?

  2. Been watching Three Body Problem. Starts off really well, but after a few eps turns in on itself and starts to become a bit unlikely and 'soapy'.
Will start watching series 2, but if it doesn't move on, will have to drop it.
Film wise, saw Dune II, which is very good, and Godzilla Minus One, which is excellent.

    1. Me and the Missus enjoyed Three Body Problem Mish. The imagery is amazing. Godzilla Minus One was great I agree. Have you seen The Creator Mish?

    1. Not seen any of those Looey. Is Arrow DC or Marvel?

    2. Arrow is a releasing company, like Umbrella and Severin. These smaller labels supply vintage entertainment (usually remastered) that the big boys have no interest in. The Giant Majin trilogy was very nicely presented with new box art and special features including interviews with the original workers . Umbrella has a good selection of Ozsploitation titles, but I'm still waiting for a re-release of "The Return of Captain Invincible". A mess of a film by Phillioe Mora which features Christopher Lee singing. I didn't work on it, but a number of my work colleagues did and there was so much more than what ended up on the screen!

    3. Very interesting Looey. Ozploitation, what a great sub-genre!
