A Masterful View of my GAF

Hello Moonbasers, the discussion recently was of GAF View Master titles. Here's my entire collection, dating back to my early teens in the 70's.

Here are the titles that would probably interest you the most. It's a pity there were not more Gerry Anderson titles released...

I must look at the Superman Returns set and see if the trainset model I worked on is featured.

All of these titles were bought at the time, often on special. All except the Lost In Space set which I eyed in the shops as a kid, but didn't buy (I assume for financial reasons!)

Finally nostalgia got the better of me and I bought a copy on eBay for the eyewatering price of $40 -I dread to think what it would cost today!

Sadly the paper perforated packaging envelopes of the old sets have not weathered the years well, but the actual films are as bright as the day they were printed.

So are there some GAF gems out there that I don't have in my collection?

  1. Awesome Looey - great memories! My Viewmaster and reels are the some of the very few artifacts I still have from my childhood.

  2. Blast from the past. I know I had a Viewmaster. The only set I think I remember is Mary Poppins. But I also had a tiny viewer that worked with reels, and I can't remember what I had for that one. Maybe I have them confused.

A great collection. I too had a View-Master set, which was a Christmas present one year. I think I had the Star Trek set with the Enterprise on the cover. Not sure if I had one of the Space:1999 sets or not - the one with the Eagle on the cover ?

  4. I looked up GAF discs on eBay and discovered a trove of titles I never knew existed.
Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Land of the Giants (at a Bargain Basement price of A$75! -gulp!)

But as for Captain Scarlet, there seemed to be no release until I did more Web Sleuthing...

...and even more interestingly, it seems I can make my own custom reels! Hmmm, another object on my bulging bucket list!

  5. There are a couple of reels in my collection. Two spring to mind. (1) The Sights of Britain, shots of St Paul's Cathedral, the Highland Games and Snowdon and (2) Star Trek, the Omegan Glory.

As with all things when I was a child, I had to make a choice as to what I had, as money was tight. So it was more ViewMaster Reels or an SPV.

But I can't complain, I experienced a loving childhood and got all the toys that really mattered.

  6. What a desirable collection, Looey. I never had a View-Master as a kid, but remember a mate having one. Fantastic piece of childhood viewing.

  7. These are one of the things that were on the horizon as a kid, some of my mates had them, but I never did. I had one of the Chad Valley Give a Show Projectors, with the big red torch like device and slides on strips. I'd love to get hold of the Apollo Moon Landing series and other space sets, some of which were staged with Action Man like figures and models, but they hold their value and are still remarkably expensive!
