The Archeology of Aoshima

It's a grey rainy arvo on the first day of winter here in Australia...

I've been digging through boxes of old papers I haven't looked at in decades.

Robot boxes? By the metric tonne! Amongst the goodies, some bits you will probably appreciate.

Up first some Aoshima kit boxes from 1977. Who doesn't love spaceships whooshing past planets?

I can almost hear the turbines scream!

A well researched page on the entire line of kits can be found at

Do you like them?

Wow, those are some way out designs. Did the models match the box tops ?

    1. Sadly the actual kits, while conforming to the basic outlines, have none of the sizzle of the paintings!

  2. The Japanese were really into their SF toys and models back in the 60s and 70s. Nowadays their SF is mostly robots. Nothing wrong with that but spaceship toys etc seem to have died out over there. These are from that old 1970s golden era. Most of these model kits were toylike with a few simple parts, wheels and clockwork motors which was common at that time. The model kits were mostly tiny 3 or 4 inches long , though a few were made in larger sizes. Fantastic artwork though.

  3. Glorious Japanese spaceships! Nothing remotely like them anywhere! And the artwork that goes with them! Thanks for sharing! SFZ
