The excellent site Fantastic Plastic shows how the kit is usually built here: https://fantastic-plastic.com/us-moon-ship-by-lindberg.htmlOriginally I went for the unpainted white version, but this time I opted for a more distressed look, which is just as well, as I managed to drop the model twice while painting it! The astronaut figures are tiny - less than a centimetre in height and impossible for me to paint, so I just lightly shaded them. I added pads on the feet and some extra modules, plus a little surface detail here and there. A lovely kit, which means I will have to dig its companion piece - The USS Explorer Transport Rocket out of the loft and try and restore that!

Return to the Moon
A return to a familiar model for me this week, with another go at the Lindberg Moonship. I had this kit years ago, with the Star Probe reissued series version, but sadly, it didn’t survive the rigours of moving house and poor storage. This time round, I bought a newer reissue of the kit, with a lovely rendition of the original 1959 box art. The kit had been built already, without the windows or decals added, so rather than leave it as is, I decided to customise it a little and add a couple more modules to the very sparse frame.

That's nice!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Bill. Love what you've added and the silvered look is great, an industrial feel to it now. Is it an Ehricke concept?
ReplyDeleteI think it's based on a Von Braun concept. Not sure if Krafty was involved!
DeleteI have this kit (the Star Probe version) and painted it white, but your dirty silver finish is way better.
ReplyDeleteApart from the US star and lettering, it kind of looks grittily Soviet. Lovely.
Nice silver weathering! It's always hard to make that look good-and you've suceeded!
ReplyDeleteThe red 'eyes' give it a spider like head!
ReplyDeleteA very nice model. It is always good to see these vintage kits being re-issued, giving us all a chance to built models that would otherwise be insanely expensive.
ReplyDeleteI wish they would bring back some of Revells back catalogue. If you follow the Fantastic Plastic link to Concept Spacecraft, there's some wonderful kits. Bill
DeleteWow, this beauty brought tears to my eyes. One of my all-time favorite of the classic SF space ships. You did a marvelous job in bringing it back to life. I had the Star Probe release many moons ago. I loved how "complicated" the design was. You really did this icon justice - bravo! SFZ
ReplyDeleteOMG - I just saw this out in The Cave - still unassembled. Mine is a newer re-issue that I bought some years back, but never got around to assembling.
ReplyDeleteMore outstanding model work Wotan! Skills!
ReplyDeleteThis could almost be your red-eyed rocket top! https://i0.wp.com/www.sciencenews.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/110621_jumping-spider_feat.jpg?resize=1440%2C700&ssl=1
