My own Two Fleet

Ages ago my friend Paul Vreede treated us to his website he'd created to celebrate Triang SpaceX toys. I thinks it's fair to use words like definitive and beautiful to describe it.

In it was and is an image that captured my imagination so much that I always wanted to recreate it.

The image is Paul's group photograph of his genuine SpaceX II toys, a terrific feat of collecting and feast of Seventies space plastic arranged fabulously on a black background. It's stunning and shown below, borrowed from Paul's website.

Here's my own attempt at the SpaceX II fleet done in 2019. I've posted it before on MC but this version I've tidied up with a blacker background.

All the vehicles I made from scratch.

They include the presumably never produced red crash tender and yellow rocket carrier.

I plan to restage it with more models at some point. It's always fun to celebrate Paul's picture, which inspired me so much.

But for now .....

  1. Brilliant! I'm still missing the space station and soyuz pair (Oh, and the 3 that nobody seems to have!).

    2. Sometimes, but that's still not the same as actually getting an original!

  2. Welcome to the club Kevin! You seem to be on a par with me now. I keep thinking its been far too long since a new (or rare) Spacex toy turned up! Bill

  4. Paul V's website is a treasure, and your attempt at cloning the great 60s Space Toy Vibe is brilliant! I never collected the Golden Astronaut series when it was available in the US, a decision I regret, but I still shudder at the thought of the boxes and boxes of the stuff on clearance at a local convenience store circa 1970 - if only I had a time machine! 7. I salute Paul V for his dedication and inspiration.
...and a double salute for Woodsy for building all those toys he never had!
My ten year old self took that same inspiration from the interface of too many wonderful toys and not enough pocket money!
To love space toys is one thing, to power your own flight into creativity using them as rocket fuel, is something else entirely!

  8. Many many thanks for all the kind words, gents - I'm blushing from head to toe!
And a standing ovation to Woodsy for his wonderful creativity - I'm always amazed how he captures the very essence of a toy with the most inspired collection of repurposed parts.
There's an overview of Woodsy's creations here btw; https://www.triangspacextoys.info/SpGAderv/OTHR/fancustm/FanWoods.html
    Best -- Paul

Another great collection of scratch-built models. If you can not find, or afford, the real thing - build it yourself.
