Das Toy Shop

It's always interesting visiting shops abroad, especially the toy aisles!

Here's a few Dinge ( German for things) I've seen among the Spielzeuge ( German for toys)

A gorgeous long plastic oil tanker, about 18 inches, that could easily be a prop in a Thunderbirds episode.

A water and soft dart gun, that totally recalls Hellboy's pistol, the name of which I forget!

Bags of plastic shurikens or throwing stars. The Kwai Chang Caine in me wants them so badly!

Water soakers seem to be getting bigger, almost to Johnny Seven sizes!

A Woolworths brand doll in Woolworths! Yes, it's still around ... In Germany!

Knockoff Bionicles

Replacement Zeroid Robot arms!

Hot Wheels.

Weapons. The huge plastic hunting knife top middle is going to lead to trouble for some kid. Can't believe it's for sale.

Having said that the nunchakus and shurikens would have been right up my Shaolin temple back in 1972!

This I couldn't believe! A huge plastic airliner named ARJ21! It's a dead ringer for the Century 21 Moon Ship too, so one will be joining me at Moonbase!

Today's car boot or Flohmarkt (flea market), which despite being tiny on account of terrible weather, the Missus and me sold virtually everything we'd taken!  Back there standing again on Saturday!

That is an impressive rack of Hot Wheels.
When I was little... Woolworths were firmly established in New Zealand. Eventually their department stores branched out in to groceries. Then the changes started. The regular Woolworths were renamed Deka, and the Woolworths name was used only for supermarkets. Then all the Deka branches were closed down. The Woolworths and Countdown supermarket chains were owned by the same company, who eventually decided to drop the Woolworths name, and re-brand all the supermarkets as Countdown. So no Woolworths at all in NZ for several years, but the name was still being used in Australia.
Then the owners of Countdown decided to drop that name, and go back to using the Woolworths name for all the supermarkets. This seems to have started last year, and my local Countdown supermarket (where I get a few Hot Wheels on short cards) has just changed over to the Woolworths name. What was the point of all that ?

  2. I'm in love with those polythene accordian arms! LIS Robots, Major Matt moonsuits... so many applications!
Of course painting those rainbow colours would be a pain, but with my hard learnt experience I can do it!
-expand to full length, prime with ESP primer applied with ultra fine steel wool. Clean off any iron fluff thoroughly, allow to sit for two hours and spray paint with flexible Automotive upholstery colours!

    1. The fast cheat is to use black spirit based markers, but they will rub off fairly easily...

    2. That's exactly what I did to replace the bendy arms on the MMM Moon Suit Bill gave me Looey. Used permanent black markers.

  3. Zweibruecken had an awesome toy shop called 'Passage Schreiner' that, at the time, was one of my go-to places for HO scale railroading stuff and dollhouse miniatures. Sure wish I had been more into toys at the time - who knows what I missed!?
