ED'S TIN: Big Deal Toys Tin USAF Jet FG-786

Woodsy and Gang,

Here's a nice little rack toy for your enjoyment.

As I've said before, not all my tin collection consists of behemoth toys and I have quite a few on the opposite end of the spectrum. This toy is still in its original header bag and made by an unknown Japanese manufacturer.

To me it looks like a caricature of an F-104 Starfighter, just a tad shorter and stubbier :-). It was packaged for Alfred M. Lewis, Inc. of Riverside, California and only $.26 cents back in the day! Ahhh for the good ol' days.

The jet measures 5" (12.7cm) L x 3 3/4" (9.52cm) wingspan x 1 5/8" (4.12cm) H.

The broad wings and those massive wingtip fuel tanks look a little like those on the Northrop F-89 Scorpion. But that was a two-seater, and the air intakes and tail are different. The letters FG, before the last three digits of the serial number, were used on the Starfighter, while the Scorpion used FV.

  2. A fab little plane Ed in a Big Deal baggy, the sort of thing I adored buying on holiday in the Sixties at the seaside. Lovely stuff.

    1. Thanx Woodsy! I have one or two more bagged planes in the collection. Rack toys were always fun as a kid - and cheap enough for mom to buy when we went to the store.

  3. That is an adorable little dimestore toy. I remember those days vividly, going to Woolworth’s with my Mom and (if I was good) getting to pick out a toy treasure. So cool that you saved this one! SFZ

    1. Thank you! I remember riding the bus with my mom to Woolworth's in downtown Milwaukee. The toy department was downstairs in the basement (along with all the sewing stuff for her) Always fun. And then we had a Roundy's supermarket right across the street plus, katy-corner to us was a Rexall drug store, both of which had great toys to choose from.
