ARTO'S MYSTERY BAT SUIT

Arto kindly sent me this snap of his late December find, a fabulous vintage vinyl Bat Suit.

Can anyone shed any light on the make of this old costume?

Do you recognise it?

Or the catalogue shown open in this old Catawiki sale picture?

That is a wonderful costume. I can not imagine many have survived. The mask looks very cat-like, perhaps an existing item re-used for a bat ? Sorry, no idea who made it, or when.

  2. Googling the image |I found the same costume on Catawiki Arto but alas its an old sale and the link has gone. Interestingly there's a magazine/catalogue page open in the picture showing the suit and there's also a round batman disk shown with the outfit as well. One step closer but no maker's name yet. Maybe someone has that catalogue! https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSQe2jskyA63XM0NARctj44zv8F_k86Gsq7K9zypUpNYZkl3xuu

  3. Well spotted, Woodsy! The Dutch magazine seems to advertise a competition with 100 cape sets as prizes ("100 Batmancapes moeten de deur uit"), but I'm not sure it's the same set as pictured here.

A Bat-collector friend of mine told me that this set was sold bagged at least in Italy, with the vinyl badge and all.

  4. That is a 'super' cool find Arto!. Back in the day when dressing up in costume wasn't just for Halloween (having had Western, military, and American Civil War costumes as a kid myself) this would have been a real winner. Back then you had Halloween costumes and role play costumes. The difference was generally in the amount of clothing items and accessories included with the role play suits. In addition, Halloween costumes normally had those colorful, molded thin plastic masks. Only personalities like The Lone Ranger or Zorro would have had masks for their role playing counterparts.

  8. Thanks Marky and Tony. I had a cape & mask combo before but the wristbands are the HTF ones. Had to buy another set just to get them. And now it turns out there's a badge too! Small steps, small steps...
