Tamiya Flying Saladin

I just love the box art on this 1960s vintage Tamiya 1/35 British Armoured Car Saladin MK-2. Much better than the bland white background on their modern kits.

The vehicle is literally flying through the air, so I guess it belongs to an airborne unit ? The real Saladin was over 11 tons, so this one must have been really travelling to reach take-off speed.

I do not know what the correct order is for the box art styles, but both are likely from the 1960s.

Two photographs from Worthpoint.

  1. Unfortunately the photo resolutions are not good enough to read the signature in the bottom right hand corner, but I'd take a punt and say it was another painting by Shigeru Komatsuzaki!

Thanks for the possible artist information. Sorry about the picture quality. Some of these kits are so obscure and rare there is very little choice when it comes to pictures. That was certainly the case here.

  3. Yes! Give me the full illustration, with background, any time over those boring silhouette pictures that Tamiya used for most of their import products. I guess at some point using the full illustration was considered old-fashioned - and that's where I bowed out of that brand!
