MPC CYGNUS KIT (PART 2)

Some more photos of my MPC Cygnus, this time against a more suitably painted backdrop.

When stars die, they can face many deaths: Some destroy themselves in monumental supernova explosions, some contract and cool to become a neutron star, but then there is The Black Hole, the most bizarre star-death of all…”

All the matter is compressed into a point so small – a singularity – that it drags everything within its gravitational field down into a maelstrom of crushing destruction!”

In the film, the Cygnus is able to maintain a constant distance from the Black Hole, and even has it’s own artificial gravity. I suspect science nuts might have an opinion on that, but for now I’ll let imagination have the edge.

It is nearing the end of the year 2193: The deep space explorer craft, USS Palomino detects a derelict spacecraft perched on the brink of a Black Hole – the USS Cygnus which has been missing for 20 years!”

The Cygnus is the domain of Dr Hans Reinhardt, a mysterious world where scientific genius and human madness intertwine, and where dreams quickly turn to nightmares!”

The Black Hole: A journey that begins where everything ends!”

  1. Very nicely done Scoop.
I doubt anyone has made a better job of building and photographing this kit.

  2. Absolutely stunning. Your merging of expert model work with artistic photography makes for a truly magical experience. These shots could easily pass for studio scenes, imho. SFZ

  4. Scoop you may be aware by now that these majestic Cygnus scenes you've recreated go straight back to the primal scenes of my youth, scenes where it all began and which will never fade away. I will have to change my screensaver now!

    1. I certainly know you're as bigger fan (if not bigger) as I am, Arto, and I'm flattered you want to use one of the photos as a screensaver. Is there a particular one you like?

    2. Hard to choose but I'd opt for the third from the top. The classic angle.

    1. Thanks Woodsy. I suspect any remake will be on hold, now that Disney have what seems like endless Star Wars spin off movies to unload. ; )

  6. Nice model and great model photography. From my point of view superior to the movie which I found very strange and a little too Disney in the wrong places.

    1. Nice of you to say so, Terra.

I suspect this dark and cerebral film would have confused a few movie goers back in the day who took their kids along, expecting the usual kiddie friendly Disney fare. The cute robots were certainly Disneyesque, but Dr Durant's violet death, the Zombie crew and the metaphysical ending all helped to earn Disney it's first PG certificate..

  7. Beautiful Work!

Like you, I didn't care for the film, but I loved that ship!
I remember seeing the kit in stores at the time.
    Don't know why I didn't get it.

You really have done a marvelous job on it.
    Internal lighting and all!

    I'm in awe.

    1. Thanks Scott. It's not a bad kit, it just needs a bit of patience with the painting.

  8. The following is off topic. Sorry, but I would appreciate it if the folks who can post would take a look at this interview with Mike Trim, model maker/designer/storyboard artist for Gerry Anderson.

I think a lot of folks here would be interested!

  13. Nice model work...excellent set of pictures Mike....I remember the film...saw it at my local Odeon...it was pretty good in most respects , Disney did well with the effects , the story though let it down in parts....your post is a visual treat....thanks for bringing back the memories...Regards Richard dixon TPD STUDIOS UK .

    1. Thanks Richard. The creative process for the film went through so many re-writes and changes of personnel which probably didn't help things. The original plot, which was conceived in the early seventies was to have been a straight forward disaster movie set in space during the disaster movie craze.

  14. Thanks for that insight...very interesting....I loved those disaster movies from Hollywood in those days ....some of the films like "Earthquake" and "Towering Inferno" were really well done ....Regards Richard Dixon .
