Years ago the blog's focus was on Project SWORD toys and their many relatives.
One such relative was the wondrous US Rocket Base released by Sears in the mid-Sixties. Its an early version of the Project SWORD Apollo Saturn. There are Japanese versions too. Bill has one of those.

I've just found this short video on YT about the Sears Rocket Base. Have a gander. Do you have anything like this? What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI remember looking at the Sears catalogs in the mid to late 60s and drooling over all the incredible space toys. We rarely went to Sears, so I rarely saw any of these beauties “in person,” but boy were they on my wish list! SFZ

ReplyDeleteNo, the fins stay put. All the variants of this toy have wheels. This rocket is bigger than the white SWORD version.
DeleteSeems to be a tin toy/plastic toy crossover. Unusual.
ReplyDeleteThe Rockets all plastic Mish. Yep, the gantry and base is metal. The SWORD version and the two Tomy versions are simply plastic rockets, no gantries, but they do have the added gimmick of an ejecting top capsule with parachute descent, which is really cool to see. Bill tested his and filmed it. On the blog in 2017.
