if course, its a direct transcendant of the Y-Wing. Cashed directly in with Empire Strikes Back and the back end of A New Hope. Even has a rear turret suggestive of an Astromech unit. Bill
And my annoyingly pedantic side says: If the Y-Wing has a turret on top that can swing around, At the Death Star, why didn't they shoot at the TIE Fighters when they came up from behind?
A couple of things. The turret is actually the ion cannons which are more designed to cripple a ship's electrical system and not right out exploderate it. The original model Y Wing was a 2 person ship with bubble turret for the gunner like the top turret on a B-17. Over time changes were made on following models mainly for lowering cost, ease of production and maintainance. Armor was stripped, shields increased, gunner position was moved behind the pilot like in the Snowspeeder. The main model of Y Wing the Rebel Alliance used was a single seat version. This helped field more ships and alleviate pilot shortages. Astromechs/droids are too busy with spacial navigation and ship component monitoring to even try and use the turret. All their memory banks are filled with astronavigation data, no room for combat programs. Pilots already have their hands full flying and dodging and trying to shoot the enemy with their fixed forward lasers. They could try and run the turret but that would be a nightmare and it is easier for them to just lock the turret in a forward firing position to supplement the lasers.
