WHO IS THE MASTER OF THE TANTALOUS VASE?

I enjoyed oggling over this old auction mixed lot. There's something for everyone in there! One thing that caught my eye was the boxed Mysterious Tantalous Vase by Peter Pan Playthings, bottom centre in the lower box.

Now that's a toy I've not seen before. Just what is a tantalous vase? Anyone know?

Looking again, what is the green thing just above to the left and what is that brown action figure just behind the Tantalous Vase next to the Coffin Bank?

Over to you readers?

Addendum:

here's some of the thing's readers have ID'd so far:

The Sutcliffe Comet

The Wells Brimtoy Cinderalla and Prince Charming Waltzing Figures

I've spotted this tin Dutch Sight Seeing Bus from 1972

and the magnificent Bandai Moon Mobile Rocket Launcher, a Sear Exclusive [Mark Bergin Toys site]

The green thingy remained stoically anonymous but lo! ....!

It's the Triang Loch Ness Monster!

  1. Hard to tell from the photo,
but the Mysterious Tantalous Vase looks like a very small children's book...?

The Tantalous Vase apparently dates from the 1950's Woodsy and is a magic trick which gives the illusion of endless water pouring from it. it comes in different colours including yellow and blue.As for the figure It's attached to a female figure in a dress, which suggests it is Cinderella and Prince Charming? my wife had a music box with figures of them when she was young and broke it. Decades later I found a modern equivalent in a charity shop which made her day! hope this helps.

  3. Tantalus was a greek mythological figure who was destined to stand in a pool of clear water, beneath a branch of low hanging fruit. Whenever he bent to drink, the water receded and whenever the reached for the fruit, it was drawn away. He is the origin of the word 'tantalise' which i'm sure we are all more than familiar with here! Bill

  4. I like the look of the grey rocket on an orange launcher which is very Dan Dare inspired.
That also looks like a light blue Sutcliffe clockwork speedboat next to it.

  5. Could that green thingy be part of a car front?

  6. I am glad to be correct with the Sutcliffe boat, the white rectangle to the top of the picture with a red circle and white cross is a Tri-ang Minic clockwork Ambulance.

A clock-work Loch Ness Monster - that would not have been my first guess. Well done to whoever figured that one out.
