ARTO'S ROY ROGERS LUNCH BOX!

What brightened my Sunday was this surprise find at the Ice Hall flea market. Something completely different, eh?

A Roy Rogers & Dale Evans RR Chow Wagon Thermos Lunch Box from 1958 in an excellent condition, amidst all the Nineties' Action Man figures!

It even had the Macy's price tag of $2,59 still on it! The stories it could tell about its journey to Finland!

  1. Wow, nice! I never saw the show or movies, but when I was a kid I got a Roy Rogers wristwatch as a gift.

  2. Whoops! I cannot tell a lie. I just looked it up, and I had Hopalong Cassidy. None of the cowboy shows or movies meant anything to me though.

That is a beautiful lunch box. A great find. The TV series did not make it to NZ, but there were a few Roy Rogers movies on TV. One of the Singing Cowboys.

    1. I always think of Elton John's wonderful song Roy Rogers.

  4. Nice find! It was always confusing that a cowboy/western TV show had a Jeep being used as well as horses.

  5. It's a gorgeous thing Arto. The real McCoy and not a repro. Some boxes are called lunch pales or pails. Wonder why?

    1. Not sure Woodsy, but I think it has something to do with the shape of the container. A propos, a friend of mine pointed out how well this standard shape of older lunch boxes imitates the form of a wagon, and how cleverly that similarity has been used.

  6. Just realised that Dale is the lady cowgirl. Dale is a boy's name in Blighty!

I had to look this up. A pail is like a bucket, but has a lid, and is used for food storage. Both have a handle for carrying.
Dale Evans was the third wife of Roy Rogers, and starred with him in several films, and The Roy Rogers Show on TV in the 1950s. Her horse was called Buttermilk.
The Roy Rogers Show was set in the present day West (the 1950s), not the Old West, which is why there were Jeeps and other vehicles. I think there were aircraft too.
