wow - you have all the best museums over there terra. I'd love to visit the Smithsonian, but seeing the space flown Discovery would be quite an experience too. An unusual name for the museum too - Udvar Hazy - I have read about it, but im unsure where its based ? Bill
It's part of the Smithsonian Museum and is located near Dulles Airport outside Washington DC. We were in DC recently for a long weekend and stopped here on the way back to NYC.
Yes both. The Enola Gay is the must see in the museum. The Smithsonian has different categories for how a craft is preserved. Sometimes it's do nothing, others it's a return to a certain time and condition. The Enola Gay is returned to it's condition on August 6, 1945. Sometimes it's fiction. They have a Westland Lysander hanging from the rafters. It was built in Canada, never left north America yet is painted black and displayed as an aircraft used to deliver SOE Agents into German occupied Europe.
I was trying to work out what the manta ray shaped vehicle marked NASA 101 was... Upon closer inspection, I realised it was the proposed Rogallo wing landing system for the Gemini capsule! I'd only ever seen illustrations and never knew they actually built a test rig!
