I've been wondering if my parents passed on my old toys when I was a kid. I ask myself this as my Daughter regularly has a clear out and passes more of her kids' toys to us for dispersal to friends kids and charity shops.
I was the youngest child of our family so any passing on would have had to have been to nephews and cousins, but I've no idea if this happened.
There were no charity shops back in the early Seventies when my toys would have been removed from my room and my Mum and Dad wouldn't have done jumble sales or anything like that. They did have connections to the local Sacred Heart church so maybe some went there.
I still maintain that the vast majority will have been simply binned. The thought of my Colourforms Outer Space Men figures and accessories, never mind a Century 21 Zero-X and Project SWORD vehicles, lying at the bottom of the metal waste bin fills me with horror!
Fortunately I managed to keep a tiny amount of childhood stuff, a couple of books and the odd magazine, but that's its.
What happened to your childhood toys, games and books readers?
I think the same probably. Oddly, my Mum kept some of my toys so I have them to this day, notably my Dinky Shado mobile and Straker's car, as well as my battery operated DC9 and Lunar Loop.

DeleteA lot of my old toys were just thrown out, mainly by my Grandmother, as I was deemed too old for them. Mum gave away a lot of children's books, and a small wicker chair that I just loved.
ReplyDeleteI did manage to hang on to all my die-casts from the 1960s, toy soldiers, Biggles books, jig-saw puzzles, and a handful of toys, such as the few tinplate examples I had. Some of these, the Mechanical Fish and Space Car 3, have survived and appeared on Moonbase Central.

Deletea sore point for me, as I recall my dad getting cheesed off with the mess in my room and hitting the cupboard with a bin bag. The base off my Topper Canaveral Rocket went in along with other damaged toys. I also decided to give a lot of stuff I thought I didnt want to my nephew, who was also given a lot of my Dinky toys to play with while I was at work. Bill

DeleteInteresting question Woodsy. We moved to our newly-built home for Christmas of '69 and the only toys that followed there were my teddy and notably a couple of Batman items, the Aoshin Batmobile and Finnish edition of Whitman playing cards. Everything saved though from there on!

DeleteMy mum threw almost all my toys out, when I left home to go to polytechnic, along with most of my annuals and comics.
ReplyDeleteThose left were put in old suitcases and stored in an outhouse.
Sadly, this was broken into some years later and the suitcases were stolen.
All I have left of my childhood stuff is a few annuals that I had taken with me and my original, battered Tardis money box.
Have we seen that battered Tardis Mish? It deserves a showing after all its been through!
