A few more bits of Avengers ephemera.
Starburst magazine was always full of decent cult TV articles, as well as articles on cult films. I stopped picking it up when it started to be filled with slash horror film articles.
Dave Rogers was a big Avengers fan and wrote several books on the subject. I believe he was responsible for starting up, Stay Tuned, the Avengers fan club.
This book, The Avengers Companion was translated from French. The Avengers was always popular in France where it was titled, Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir, which translates as bowler hat and leather boots!
Another Dave Rogers Avengers, this time 'complete.. I seem to recall Dave released at least one more Avengers book after this, so obviously not quite complete!
These are pages from the TV Times New Avengers Souvenir issue which came out in 1976, to help promote the new series.
Nice, the only one I've got is the TV Times souvenir magazine.
ReplyDeleteWell spotted Kev, I've just realised I didn't include a photo of the TV Times souvenir cover! Doh! ; D
DeleteGreat stuff Scoop. I had Starbursts too but for me it was the horror content! Interesting to see the French title of the show. My Missus watched it as Schirm Charme und Melone in Germany, which translates to Umbrella, Charm and Bowler Hat. It sort of reminds me of Lady P's motto of Elegance Charm and Deadly Danger. In fact Lady Penelope would have fitted right into the Avengers world!
ReplyDeleteSylvia Anderson based the Lady Penelope character on Cathy Gale/Emma Peel, Woodsy.
DeleteBlind in One Ear: The Avenger Returns
ReplyDeleteby Patrick Macnee is also a good read!
It includes his adventures on a Bond film and drinking... lots of drinking!
I've got that somewhere I found it in a remainder bookshop for a knock down price. I must confess I never got round to reading it though, Lewis.
