MURDERSVILLE LOCATION

Keeping to The Avengers theme, here’s a few photos and screen grabs from The Avengers episode, Murdersville!

For anyone who isn’t aware of the plot, it centres around the leafy village of Little Storping -in-the-Swuff which conceals a secret: All, but around half a dozen of the villagers have been bribed to allow executions to take place in the village!

The village of Aldbury is used for the location of Little Storping, and also doubles for Swingingdale in the Avengers episode, Dead Man’s Treasure.

I visited Aldbury, on my way back from this year’s Fanderson 40th party. Unfortunately, the UK was going through quite a harsh dry spell.

As it looked when I visited

As it looked in Dead Man's Treasure.

The village greenery was more light brownery, and the village pond, used in the episode to give Mrs Peel a ducking was parched.!

The village pub - The Greyhound Inn

It's called The Happy Ploughman in the episode.

Nevertheless it was interesting to see how the village had changed from 1967.

The Library and Museum where the unco-operative villagers are held.

As it was when I visited.

In the episode it's pretty much car free, now you'd be hard pressed to get a parking space.

Some buildings have hardly changed.

Aldbury has been used several times in TV and film productions. This cottage below was seen in the 1979 film, The Shillingbury Blowers.

  1. I have visited it several times, since 2001, as I live nearby in Hemel Hempstead.
A few summers ago I took my brother and his wife there and we sat in the seating area, outside the pub, where the two villainous locals sit in the Avengers episode.
As a big fan of the show, my brother was thrilled.

    1. That sounds great, Mish. Sadly the pub was shut when we visited, but considering that's where we see the first execution, maybe that was a good thing!; D

  4. Lovely Time Travelling adventures!
The last few times I've been back to England, I've done similar time trips around my childhood environs. Sadly 50 years have really make a difference to these sleepy villages! Really the places we want to visit are the ones inside our heads!

    1. Yes , these places have seen a lot of changes over time, Lewis. To be fair to Aldbury, it wasn't shown at its best, what with the drought and all. One thing that has changed over time is the amount of cars there, it's more or less a car park now!

  5. I've seen it in the last few years in better times, with a full pond and lush grass.
To be honest, it looks almost identical to how it looked in the 60s, except for the cars, as you say Scoop.
