BATFINK

I recall watching the American Batfink on New Zealand television a long, long time ago. The episodes carry the copyright dates 1966 and 1967.

Batfink was a superhero, who closely resembled Batman, except that he was a real bat. His sidekick was named Karate, and was a cross between Kato in The Green Hornet, and Maxwell Smart from Get Smart.

Batfink had wings of steel, which were bullet-proof, a very useful feature. To help him solve crimes he used his Supersonic Sonar Radar to find clues and track down the villains.

For transport, he had a pink Volkswagen with a purple interior called the Battilac, with bat-fins at the rear. This was driven by Karate, just as Kato drove the Black Beauty in The Green Hornet.

The title is spelled out on a wall in bullet holes - I am sure this is also taken from another TV programme, but can not recall which one.

Episodes can be found on You Tube, including the first episode 'The Pink Pearl of Persia'.

Batfink - This Is Your Life, shows how Batfink became a superhero crime fighter, and got his wings of steel.

The series has been released on DVD, but there does not look to be much in the way of Batfink merchandise around, beyond a few T-Shirts and figures.

Do you remember Batfink?

  1. Batfink was one of the coolest parody cartoons of the 60s - loved it to pieces! I even managed to snag a few of the cartoons on 16mm film when I was in college. Batfink and The Mighty Heroes were my go-to parody cartoons of the day, followed closely by Roger Ramjet and George of the Jungle!
