As with most things that have gone I hanker for them even more.
So it is with Weekend chocolates, Mackintosh's wonderful trays of delights that could be eaten any time but often on a Saturday night when my parents cracked open a box.
Every single one of the chocs was terrific. The fudge, the chocolate cherry cup, the chocolate cracknel, the wrapped raisin fudge and the fabulous nougaty montelmar. Even the lemon jelly slice would be welcome back!
I would love to have all this weekend to make up my mind again!
What a delicious Christmas Day they would give me.
You too?
I do not remember ever seeing or having this selection, but I am sure I would have devoured the lot in very short order.
ReplyDeleteWas there a popular NZ choccy box back then Paul?
DeleteI had forgotten these.
ReplyDeleteI should not have.
They were magnificent !
Chocolates AND sweets, in one box.
They were indeed magnificent Mish, much better than the still-available Milk Tray [because the lady ....]
DeleteI was thinking about these the other day, it only reinforces how incredibly bland the selection is today, Black magic and All Gold have lost all the 'expensive' ones, Quality Street and Roses have also been simplified, while Heroes and Celebrations (the new kids on the block) are just miniaturized regular bars i.e. - a bloody swizz! You can sometimes find nice phantom-brand boxes in TKMaxx, especially at this time of year!
ReplyDeleteH
Never knew about phantom brands Hugh. I will have to check out TKMaxx! Ta!
DeleteI dreaded my mam getting these at xmas or birthday, as the sweets were so naff! There was only the noisette cup worth stealing! Terrys All Gold were my favourite, with the lovely rich dark chocolate and interesting centres. My favourite sweets from back in the day were Lucky Numbers! Bill
ReplyDeleteTerry's All Gold were superb yes. Lucky Numbers? Never heard of them. What were they like Bill?
DeletePopular chocolate boxes in New Zealand in the 1960s and 1970s. There were Roses (still around), which were individually wrapped in small silvery plastic squares, and twisted at the ends. Cadbury Continental, mostly unwrapped chocolates in moulded plastic trays, with a few in gold foil. Yes, Milk Tray - there was later a Milk Tray chocolate block. Also Queen Anne chocolates. The company made chocolates, and had a chain of shops selling boxed and loose chocolates, and icecreams. My Mother was the manageress of one of their shops for a few years. The chocolates were brought back a few years ago, but are very expensive. I am sure there were others, but these were the ones we had, and therefore the ones I remember. There was one called Winning Post, but I do not recall what was in that. Mackintosh's toffee assortments.
ReplyDeleteOh yes! The Milk Tray chocolate bar! God how I loved those Paul! Thanks for reminding me!
DeleteI think these were the best box of chocolates you could buy good value and excellent quality
ReplyDeleteMackintosh’s did it,
ReplyDeleteThey went right out and did it,
Mackintosh’s did it with Weekend!
