I was in two minds about The Rings of Power on Amazon. Episode 1 was an ice-breaker I guess. We had come to expect so much after Peter Jackson's two terrific trilogies.
As I've watched the next few episodes shown so far I have begun to enjoy RoP very much and now look forward to Fridays when it airs!
Wanting more Middle Earth, I've re-watched the Hobbit trilogy with the Missus. With the Hobbit set far in the future from Rings of Power you can still see the various pieces forming and moving round the table of Tolkien's earlier world.
I wonder if there'll be any toys?
I've also seen terrible reviews of Rings of Power too. Panning it. What do you think so far readers?
A lot of my friends have been telling me how horrible it is based solely on the reviews.

I always like to make up my mind on my own.
I mean, for years, people told me that Star Trek and Star Wars and all science fiction was trash.
One question on the show though: One thing I really liked in the Peter Jackson version was that there was no blood or gore. I guess I have to admit, I'm squeamish, and I don't watch stuff with horrible violence.
So, did they stick with the Bloodless Peter Jackson theme, or do they go for the bloody violent "Game of Thrones" theme?

DeleteI started watching it, but the ridiculously kitsch 'Harfoots' with the leader Lenny Henry making faces immediately put me off. By contrast, Galadriel and the elves and their culture looks great and the basic premise is excellent. You can see where the money went in terms of production, but Jacksons epics were flawed for similar reasons - such as padding out the simple Hobbit tale into a trilogy and adding whole swathes of nonesense scenes (Sylvester McCoy for starters). RoP has potential, but after the deadly dull third episode, I doubt I will go back to it as a Tolkien purist. Actually, I had more enjoyment watching these:

DeleteSorry, I basically boycott any new TV/Movie programming now. The little I bothered to watch was all over-produced CGI garbage imho. And usually Politically Correct and "Woke" and all that jazz. Not for me thanks, not when I can pop in my Widescreen DVD of Godzilla Vs Megalon and enjoy some QUALITY entertainment! Do I sound like an "Old Coot" yet?
ReplyDeleteWell me and the misses watched it and loved it. She's read the Silmarillion from cover to cover and thought the producers did a good job.
ReplyDeleteI am with the boycotting the Woke Garbage! Both of us have boycotted the current Dr Who because of it. We tried out one episode and that was enough. Why these crackpot showrunners and writers get commissioned in the first place is beyond me.
The nearest we've ever managed to tolerate is the Star Trek "Discovery" series. But to be honest even that has the cheesy, twee, faint smell of carbolic Woke bubbling off it, but its kept to tolerable levels. At least for us!
The rest of the new Star Trek series we've found an enjoyable romp.
Just like the new Lord of the Rings series. But I guess it's horses for courses.

DeleteWhat's The series House of the Dragon and Wheel of Time like anyone?
ReplyDeleteGot to say, I don't like House of the Dragon. Characters are all unpleasant, the story is slow and seems to be all about the line if succession. Also, it's probably just me being grumpy, but it is nigh on impossible to see. Key scenes take place in total darkness and I have no idea what is happening. The rare scenes in daylight are shot against the light so everyone is still in shadow.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't realized it's a prequel to Game of Thrones Kev. As I've never seen that there's not much point me embarking on House of the Dragon I don't think. Total darkness puts me off as well!
