Yellow over red, that is difficult. I would use a light grey undercoat to kill the red, then matt yellow, and a top coat of matt, semi-gloss, or gloss yellow, depending on the finish you want. Humbrol or Tamiya enamels. The canopy, engine details, and undercarriage will be to be protected, especially if you are going to use spray paints. What about replacement markings ? Do you have anything suitable in the spares box ?
I don't think you'll get a good yellow over grey primer, it tends to kill it, I'd go with white myself but I agree with Paul, getting yellow over red will not be easy.
Ummm, and not to complicate things further ( but I am!) Are you going for a model look or a toy look? Toys tend to be moulded in coloured plastic, so the finish is actually often a little translucent as opposed to the solid colours of a model! To be honest, I've never worried about that detail in my toy restorations! THEY'LL NEVER NOTICE!
White acrylic primer spray. Then yellow acrylic spray paint. Humbrol is pretty good. You'll need to mask the cockpit, wheels etc.
