Hi
I have some sad news today. James Bama, the artist responsible for the box art on the Aurora monster kits in the 1960s, as well as many book and magazine covers, has passed away. Here is an obituary on Max's Models. Mr Bama was 96.

I have a collage of the Aurora Monsters as my desktop wallpaper. Those images caught my eye at the tender age of 4,and as a result,I took the challenge of building these kits many times over my lifetime, and that challenge continues today thanks to re-issues by companies like Moebius and Atlantis.I am sad to hear of Mr Bama's passing, but I am glad that he lived a full life.
ReplyDeleteA great artist. 96 is good innings!
ReplyDeleteInspiring box art and book covers.
ReplyDeleteA great illustrator and design creative.
Those exciting Aurora kits with their classic monster illustrations were fantastic. Ace artist. - Tony K
ReplyDeleteAlong with Forry J. Ackerman's Famous Monsters, James Bama's Aurora monster box art was the quintessence of the Sixties Monster Craze and probably for me the single-most important illustrations I ever saw as a kid. Rest your brushes James. You did it all.
ReplyDeleteBama also did the great covers for the reissues of the Doc Savage paperback series in the late 60s and 70s. Great covers, with the standard Hero ripped shirt. At one point you could order a Doc poster from the insert in the middle of the paperback for the reason "Help Doc buy a new shirt!" or something similar. Great illustrator.
