There appears to be a nostalgia boom for all things 1980's including toys.
The brands that were massive back then seem to be making a comeback and may have indeed never really gone away.
At Moonbase Junior's recent 5th birthday party the presents from all his family and friends were largely new releases of 80's TV toy brands and some even older brands like Hot Wheels.
In no particular order we had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dress-up costume, a Playmobil Mars Mission space station, a Hot Wheels mega garage, a set of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures, re-issues of Mattel's Masters of the Universe figure range namely He-Man, Skeletor and Battle Cat.
The food was equally retro with Space Raiders and a fantastic Hot Wheels birthday cake a local cake maker made.
Will these old 1960's and 1980's brands last forever do you think?

DeleteEach generation looks back mainly to the toys of their own era. For us, the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. For the next generation of collectors it is the 1980s and 1990s. Just look at the You Tube channels such as Laura Legends and Bella's Toy Chest, covering 1980s and 1990s toys. Soon it will be the toys of the early 2000s. There will always be an interest in the older toys, just as there is still an interest in 19th century toys, and early 20th century, but this will become more of a niche market as those you remember and played with these toys pass on. As for other areas, just look at how many old bands reform every few years, and tour again.

ReplyDeleteAs the philosopher George Santayana said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - so all the bright young things wanting to look hip and happening in the toy world, just desire the toys they just missed as kids!
