Here is an old TV ad for a working Star Trek communicator, with a range of 1300 feet. The aerial is a new feature.

    I have the Wand Company communicator, a faithful replica that Bluetooths to your mobile phone and functions as a real communicator. Proper sound effects and you answer by flipping it open!
