I liked this model made in 1972 by Ira Dahms. Its a Moonscope variant. I think the Moonscope was also issued as a Space 1999 moon car as well. Do you like Ira's old model?
Interesting thread. That's a pretty heavy rebuild of the original George Barris design. Sadly it doesn't incorporate the original's distinctive tyres, but it is a different look. The AMT kit was repackaged as the Space 1999 Alien vehicle which is where I know it from (although I never had the kit). Doing a Google search, I discovered MPC also released a Moonscope kit, but it features 6 wheels and a restyled nose that more resembles a dune buggy. There's also interesting facts out there (read George Barris' Wikipedia page which details his Back To The Future troubles!)
And for more on the Moonscope, there's this article...
Ira Dahm did 4 variations on the Moonscope, and published stories about those kit bashes in these issues of Car Model magazine: June ’72, August ’72, December ’72, and March ’73. I was obsessed with variation #3 in the Dec ’72 issue back-in-the-day, and even tried to build it from cardboard scraps! Fast forward to 2019 and I decided to go whole hog and build it more-or-less as described in the old magazine. It was tough, but fun, and I realized I couldn’t have built it way back in the ‘70s. I posted a story about it here: https://30squaresofontario.blogspot.com/2019/11/how-i-built-ira-dahms-variation-no3-on.html
A superb article JD. I like your blog a lot! Such a talented modeller! The variation 3 Moonscope has a sort of Triang SpaceX or even Battle Space! look to it.

DeleteWhat a labour of love J.D! Well worth the effort though, a much superior model to the rubbish AMT kit.
ReplyDeleteExcellent “old school” SF build, very worthy of this blog.
