HOW AND WHY DINOSAURS

I adored dinosaurs when I was a kid and this How and Why book was one of my favourite reads.

Is it a book you had?

  1. I probably saw it. I was and still am a fan of dinosaurs. Interesting how the ones of our youth have changed, they're often feathered now and the theropod ones now walk with their backs horizontal. In the future they'll probably discover they had smartphones too.

    1. ha ha, that made me chuckle Kev! Would you say the Jurassic Park technology, extracting dinosaur DNA from a mozzy in amber, is possible?

    2. I'm no expert but I don't think DNA survives enough to extract enough to get anywhere near a genome. I reckon it would be easier to do it by taking a dinosaur descendant (bird!) and switching off the later genes and turning on the earlier ones.

  2. Oh yes! One of Timmy's favorites! All that amazing artwork - how did dinosaurs fight? = T Rex vs Triceratops. I gave my UK version to my sisters kids to read over 30 years ago, and missed having it so much I bought the US hardback 'Deluxe Edition' a couple of years ago. Not gonna let this one go anywhere!

    1. What's extra in the deluxe edition Timmy?

    2. Its exactly the same except that its a hardback. (I think it only says 'Deluxe Edition' on the first edition of the hardback.) I shall have to see if I can find a cheap UK softback version for my nieces youngest son (he is 4) who loves dinos too.

    1. These were re released in the U.S. by Lindberg a few years ago.I built the Triceratops, Corythosaurus, and Ankylosaurus and I'm searching for the rest.

    2. Yes! Forgot about the Lindberg reissues! I can’t believe I got such decent paint jobs on them back then, with just a brush and Testors Pla! Don’t think I could recreate that look today.

  5. Dinos were always a source of fascination for me too. I had the cracking book, I was always fascinated by the slightly disgruntled face on the Bronto on the cover and amazed by ythe big turquoise coloured Elasmosaurus near the back. Ive just found the revised space book from this series, so Dinosaurs are on my wants list too. My other favourite was the PGTips Prehistoric Animals cards!

The Revell Beatles kits - the ones of the Fab Four from Liverpool ? Those are now very rare and very expensive kits. I do not think they were available for very long, and have not been re-issued since they came out in 1964. Did he have the full set of four kits ?

The Le Brea Tar Pit kit came out in 1971. It featured a prehistoric Woolly Rhino sinking into the Tar Pit, and a Giant Vulture on a tree stump. No idea if it has been re-issued. I never had any dinosaur or prehistoric kits, as I was more interested in planes and tanks.
