Dazzle Camouflage

Hi Woodsy

Some time ago you ran a couple of items on the Dazzle camouflage used on ships, mainly in WW1.

Here is a short item from You Tube on this very subject, with photos of various ships painted in these schemes.

One point that usually gets over looked, is that a ship under way is going to be emitting a good deal of smoke, which is going to give away the location of the ship, even if it is painted an inconspicuous grey, so using Dazzle is not really going to increase your chances of being seen by an enemy submarine, but it is going to make an attack more difficult.

Also, submarines frequently attacked on the surface using their deck guns, in order to save their limited supply of torpedos.

Why ships used this camouflage in World War I - YouTube

Yours Sincerely,
Paul Adams from New Zealand
