Well, Well, Wells

The Royal Mint is coming under fire for its issue of the new £2.00 coin, commemorating the work of H.G Well's. Featuring a Martian Tripod from War of the Worlds and the eponymous Invisible Man, it has managed to show the fighting machine with four legs and the invisible man with a gentlemanly topper, as opposed to his 'wide brimmed' hat as described in the story. Amazing how they could miss something as obvious as an extra leg on one of the most iconic and recognisable literary images of science fiction. Might be worth looking out for the quadropedal martian, in case the Mint decide to fix their gaffe, before they are laughed out of the bank.

  1. Brilliant! It's like Dapol's Doctor Who range, with it's two handed Davros!

  3. Perhaps the Martians have clover DNA, with a four limbed variant ?!

  4. It is a tad worrying that nobody at the Royal Mint can count!

The 'leg' at the front does seem to be joined to the upper, saucer-like section, rather than the lower portion like the rest of the legs. So perhaps it is not actually a leg ? But given it changes angle, it is not the beam of a heat-ray. So what might it be ?

  7. No, that's a fourth leg alright.
If you look online you can see it has a segment going back to the lower part of the machine, below the 'saucer' section, though the perspective is a bit awkward.
    Mish.

Thanks Mish, I see what you mean. Yes, a tripod with four legs. Seems the Royal Mint is not the only one making such absurd mistakes. Obviously the artist did not bother to read the books.
