Renwal Kits

Hi Woodsy,

From Max's Models, here is one of his excellent kit company histories, this one is on Renwal, including their military kits, ships, Aero-skin planes, cars, and visible kits. There is a beautiful Polaris missile submarine with full interior detail.

Anyone got any Renwal kits?

  1. I remember having that Polaris sub with interior detail whan Revell reissued the Renwall model. Massive kit with great detail. I also remember that the Renwall Visible Man and Visible Woman kits were on display in Dr Russell's office in Space 1999!

  2. Apparently the American Dept. of Defense should not have released the plans to Renwal for the sub- it was still top secret!

  3. When I was a kid it seemed as if my uncles always gave me plastic models for Christmas, and one year I got the Polaris sub (the Thomas Jefferson).

Renwal was one of the smaller US kit makers, which started out making general toys, before moving into proper kits. From the 1950s to the 1970s they produced a wide range of subjects, but not in the same quantities as the US Big Three - Revell, Monogram, and Aurora. They closed down in the 1970s, and at least some of their moulds went to Revell, who did re-issue various models. Their most famous kits were the Visible models, with a clear plastic outer shell, and interior parts - such as model humans with their internal organs and other disgusting bits. I never had any of these kits, as Renwal, like Aurora, closed down at more or less the same time that I became interested in kit building.
