I'm pretty sure I used to grow a sort of white fur on coal as a kid. Could that be right? It was a sort of crystalline layer that emerged. Not sure how I did it now! I may have added colour.
Yes! I think we used to call it a coal garden. I'd forgotten that! Just remembered we had coal delivered to the side of the house when I was a kid. Down a chute into the coal cellar! Totally forgotten that!
A Crystal Garden - various kinds of household chemicals could be used to grow crystals in water and on tissue paper and presumably on coal!
