BOY BUS CONDUCTOR

I'm pretty sure I had a bus conductor set as a kid.

A cap maybe, perhaps a badge.

What I can see see in my mind's eye is a dull grey tin ticket machine that had a roll of tickets - maybe? - inside and a shoulder strap.

You could pull a ticket out and punch it at the side of the unit, two small holes that were hugely satisfying.

This old Berwick Toys set I saw looks familiar. Did you have one?

You can see more old conductor sets on Transtar http://www.transtar-promotions.co.uk/geoff-and-linda-price-guinness-world-record-model-bus-collection/children-s-bus-conductor-sets-1930-s-to-1960-s/

  1. No, but I remember Post Office counter sets, in a similar vein.

Yes, but nothing like this very complete set, with cap and ticket machine. I do remember a cardboard pouch (I assume it must have had a shoulder strap ?), with a front flap that folded over. There was a slot in the back, into which several blocks of toy bus tickets in different colours were fitted. The punch was a simple affair of bent wire, a bit like a hanger or giant paper clip. I can not be sure after at least 50 years, but I think the main colour of the pouch was yellow.

Oh Wow! Another memory excavated from the sediments of my childhood!
YES! I had a tinplate ticket machine. Mine was bright almost chrome silver, with red leatherette straps and the bent wire punch mechanism. I had a roll of beige tickets printed on coarse almost blotting paper grade paper with circular holes between each ticket for easy tearing. As I think about it, there may have been a mint green and dusty pink roll as well.
Now I'm confused, because I also seem to remember a rectangular waist mounted ticket carrier with spring wire clips to keep the tickets in place, so maybe they weren't on a roll after all.
I don't recall ever having a hat or any other accessories.
I think these forgotten memories may have spurred me to make tickets for my Home Cinema and to an extent, I may be conflating my child and adult memories.
-It's difficult to keep all these experiences straight when you have never really grown up!

    1. ha ha, a one way ticket to childhood please conductor! I think when I look back too Looey I see the actual proper ticket machines used by real conductors as well as the little toy box tin I had and yes, they get ... conflated! Great word! I so remember getting on the back of a double decker and attempting to climb the steps upstairs as it set off. thrilling and scary!

  4. I had a set that I think was made by Merit. Hat, badge, ticket stick with rubber bands to hold individual tickets and a silver rectangular ticket punch on a red strap. It was very much like the outfit London Transport bus conductors used. I no longer own it but I do still own lots of colourful real bus tickets from the 50's.

    1. Those tickets were special Terran. Hard paper I seem to recall, slightly rough. I wonder what that paper was?

  5. It's the ticket machine that rings a bell (no pun intended).
I don't think I had one, but I think my infants school did, as an educational tool, to teach coinage.
    Mish.

    1. I liked the unintended pun Mish. Just the ticket that! ha ha. Those ticket machines were educational. They call catching buses independent travel in schools now and its part of whats called Life Skills. Not that you could go anywhere at the moment as we don't really have a life!

  6. Last time I used one of these, there was a fight on the bus and two tickets got punched.
