Being home alone at the mo I settled down with the Moonbase Mutt last night and enjoyed a rare Chinese takeaway and a film on Amazon prime. Muttley got a large hide chew.
The takeaway was stupendous - prawn toast, ribs in BBQ gravy, roast pork in black pepper and boiled rice - and a bag of crackers and some crimson gloop. Half of its left for tonight! Blue said the chew was very chewy.
With sticky fingers I failed to find any decent new sci-fi films on Prime - it seems quite limited - so I opted for The Dark, a 2018 horror. The blurb compared it to Let the Right one In, a unique Scandi vampire story, which I liked a lot. So into The Dark I plunged spare rib in hand.
It is like Let the Right One in on the surface but fortunately it is its own story - essentially a boy and a ghoul - and going to a different place altogether. I won't spoil it, suffice to say it was well-acted, beautifully filmed and held my attention till the end. If you don't like teenage leads with unusual appetites then avoid but everyone else in the film is a burly adult, of whom most ... well, die.
The second flick I watched was a new spy tale called Official Secrets. Starring Keira Knightly as a staffer with the British intelligence services, the film is based on a true story of whistle-blowing before the second Gulf War. The interplay between journalists, police, shady security guys and the couple at the heart of the flick is nail-biting. As in concerns official secrets and treasonable acts I shan't go into it any further lest I blab too much! needless to say if you liked All the Presidents Men, Spotlight and stories where Newspapers break huge stories then this is for you.
Munching Chinese Crackers too quickly, I tried another spy flick after that with Ewan McGregor and a bunch of Russians in Marrakesh but couldn't cope with all the noise so off it went.
Not sure what to watch tonight with my second prawn toast special. Spies and Space would be good for me. Bones and lady dogs for Blue! Any ideas?
Well theres The Old Guard, with Charlie Theron, not seen it, or Atomic Blonde with her again. Or Salt, with Angelina Jolie. If you like action and strong female leads, Wanted is good and Jolie excels in the role. For gearheads, Ford vs Ferrari is excellent, as is the earlier Rush
ReplyDeleteDo you mean Charlize theron, the J'Adore model? Thanks for the tips. I'm not really a petrolhead although I do like Hot Wheels.
DeleteI tried Underwater recently, which is utter pants. Deepstar Six did it much better. For Space, id go for Salyut 7 (with subtitles) or Kill Command for robot action
ReplyDeleteUnderwater and pants? Do you mean it was trunks? DS 6 is excellent and is up there with the classier Abyss. I shall check out Salyut 7 and Kill Command on Prime if theyre on it. I did see a Russian-inspired flick last night as it happens.
DeleteRush is a great film!
ReplyDeleteIt is, amazing to see the six wheel Elf Tyrell in there too
DeleteThanks guys. I'll ask Blue what he thinks.
ReplyDeleteThere is always the best of the StarWars movies: SPACEBALLS
ReplyDeleteha ha, I really must see it Terran!
DeleteNot sure it is still available anywhere, but a space film I remember fondly from years ago is Marooned, about a fated Apollo mission. No dogs that I remember though!
ReplyDeleteI like Marooned too Andy. Caught it one Sunday afternoon on TV. The Lifting Body is reminiscent of the SpaceX version a bit.
DeleteHave you checked out Spy starring Melissa McCarthy? Very funny and some good action sequences! - MJ Southcoast base
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid the new Ghostbusters has put me off Melissa for a bit MJ. She is very funny though.
