THE SHOPS ARE OPEN!

Lockdown is easing in England. In fact it's almost over. 1 metre distancing still remains and some facilities are still shut; gyms, theartes, swimming pools, schools and bowling alleys to name a few still closed.

Everything else is open though and from July 4th you can even stay overnight somewhere else. Families can come together, two whole household's worth and sleepover if they want.

Most industries are back working full time - except my own, schools - and the hospitality sector is gearing up to a staycation tsunami and a flood of holiday-hungry tourists in July.

Still being furloughed I'm cautious about re-entering the world as it stretches itself out of hibernation.

Corona is still out there lurking like a vampire and as we've seen on the news its capable of quickly jumping onto specific congregations like meat packers and the R rate shoots up. Scary stuff still.

After 3 months at home, only venturing out to supermarkets and the odd day out with a car crash cherry on top, we do feel inclined to take only small steps back into civilisation.

Our first job is helping with childminding our new Granddaughter and catching up with our Grandson, Moonbase Junior, who told me this week on the phone about the dwarf planetoid Maki Maki! He's only 3!

The next step will be a visit to a really good charity shop we know as long as they are open and we keep our distance!

How do you plan to re-enter your world? Have you done already?

  1. We're in the U.S., Las Vegas, and not changing our behavior at all. We've seen the new infection rates shoot up as local goofballs surge back into crowded restaurants, bars and such. My dad is a healthy 91yr old and I'm determined to keep him out of it.

  2. As I live at a resort, I have mixed feelings about the relaxation of the rules.
We shall continue to get shopping delivered, keep away from people when we go out, and keep visitors at a distance. The comments above tend to confirm my pessimistic view of what is going to happen. Stay safe, all.

    1. Mass gatherings of youths appear to be the new norm Andy. Are the Norfolk beaches full?

  3. NYC relaxed some restrictions on Monday.

On Tuesday we drove down from Connecticut for a few hours to pick-up mail from home and office.

Our apartment building superintendent showed us a video on his phone of the rioters that ransacked a liquor store (off license) a few doors from our building and then looted the pharmacy across the street. At the time he phoned the NYPD who did not respond by arresting anyone their answer being they were told by the Mayor not to arrest protestors. Clearly a case of a police department made up of a majority of non NYC residents and their grievances with an incompetent Mayor.

Not knowing the difference between protestors and thieves shows a remarkable lack of intelligence. Don't believe TV shows or movies that show NYPD as competent, it's FICTION.

On the bright side I had a haircut/beard trim for the first time in four months and while gray, my hair no longer looks like Methuselah!

    1. Congrats on the haircut Terran. Your trip sounds like the script from Escape from New York with Kurt Russell. I hope the Big Apple recovers from everything and resumes its place as a beacon of creativity and acceptance.

  4. I guesse my re-entering the real world will be when my wife and I can go on a walk around our local town, in the warm sun, as we have for excersise lately, and end it with a long cool beer in a pub, on the way back.

I wonder if these mass gatherings erupting everywhere were predictable?

  6. Haircut booked for July 7 and after that I'll be looking for work. I'm a freelance Film and TV actor and fall through the net of UK GOV 80% payment scheme (no hard feelings , life can be tough !) , so as the industry is still under considerable working restrictions I guess I'll have to go back to my old career as a Mechanical Engineer for the foreseeable future.

  7. Down here in Oz the shops have been open all the way through, but we only go shopping if we have to. The Government still requires us to work from home unless we absolutely need to go workplaces. In our part of the country access to pubs, clubs, etc was supposed to be widened this week but a fresh spike in Covid cases means the relaxation is being deferred for 6 weeks. Still, we're doing OK down here - only 7.500 cases and 104 deaths since it started (in a country with a population of 25 million).

Personally, my own main casualty is holidays. I'm currently supposed to be holidaying in the UK and Europe, but the virus killed those holiday plans.....:(

    2. In the UK: London (landing point), Brighton (to visit family working in the UK and to see the Toy Museum), the Channel Islands and anywhere else with old toy shops! In Europe: France (Normandy and WW1 battlefields), Denmark, Baltic cruise, Czech republic (for a heavy metal festival) and probably bits of Germany. Oh well, hopefully next year if they find a cure....

      Cheers, Tony

    4. Already done - have a big flight credit from Qantas to use to get to the other side of the planet. Just hope covid has all blown over by next year or we'll have to wait until 2022.....

  8. Paul Adams from New Zealand6/27/2020 2:50 am

In New Zealand just about everything is back to normal, shops open, mass gatherings allowed again. The buses, at least in Auckland, are still not accepting cash fares. A few people are still wearing masks. After a run of 24 straight days with no new cases at all, and all domestic cases having recovered, things were looking really good. Since then, several cases have been detected among people returning from overseas. Some of these were let out early, many without even being tested first, and other problems, so all the good done in the last few months could easily be undone by lax border controls. I went to a local (usually monthly) book fair last weekend, and got five books for $1 each, about 50p. This was their first fair since lockdown. Hoping model fairs start up again soon, that would be my idea of things truly getting back to normal.

    1. Wow, Fenton, what a CV! I'd like to see Ready Player One. Saw Commuter recently with Big Liam. Rogue Nation is great. And small world indeed, me and the Missus have had a lockdown TV project, watching the 'box set' of ALL episodes of Silent Witness - in reverse. We started with the most recent and have spent months going back to the early stuff with Sam Ryan, one 2 part episode each night since March!. Which episodes were you in?

  10. I've had a look through my records and it was an episode called "In a lonely place" (series 17?) filmed in 2013 - set in a strip club as I recall (jobs gotta have some perks after all ;+))

    1. Thanks for looking Fenton! We remember that one! So you've met the four main actors then? I can't get over how much Emilia Fox looks like her Dad. She always makes me think of Day of the Jackal when I see her - every night at the mo! Good luck getting more work soon.

  11. Worked with her cousin Lawrence on an episode of Lewis too (Beyond Good and Evil)
